Visual Anthropology in Historical Research

On September 23, 2022 in the Institute of History and Law of the Abai University the international scientific conference «Visual Anthropology in Historical Research: Science and Media Space» was held as part of the scientific project of IRN AP08857194 «Visual anthropology and the history of images of Kazakh culture XIX - beginning. XXI century: Evolution and Acquisition of Subjectivity» (Agreement No. 294 dated November 16, 2022, project leader, Associate Professor Dalayeva T.T.). Researchers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, France, Russia, South Korea, Uzbekistan made presentations at the conference. The conference was organized in a mixed format: online (ZOOM) for foreign and non-resident participants, and combined - for participants from Almaty.

The aim of the event is the historical and anthropological study of visual narratives and practices of gaining agency on the visual sources of Kazakh and world culture of the late XIX - early XXI centuries, presented in modern scientific and media space.

During the conference, the methods of visual anthropology were discussed in a historical retrospective, as well as the problems and prospects for integrating the methods of visual anthropology into the local system of Kazakhstani historical and anthropological materials.

The participants of the conference expressed their gratitude to the organizers for holding it and expressed their wish for joint work in this direction.
